analog media

what is "analog media" and why does it matter?

analog media and digital media refer to different methods of recording, storing, and reproducing information. analog media represents information through continuous physical changes or signals. in contrast, digital media encodes information as numerical data, typically using binary digits (0s and 1s), which computers and digital devices can process.

some examples of analog media include photographic film, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, and vinyl records. for an illustration of an analog process, film photography captures images through a chemical process in which light alters the film's light-sensitive emulsion. sometimes analog media and physical media are used interchangeably, but not all physical media is analog, and not all analog media is physical. for example, a CD or DVD is digital media on a physical disc.

i believe the preservation of analog media and physical media generally is more important than ever with the rise of generative AI and the threat it poses to human creativity. creating and sharing analog media fosters artistic expression and cultural preservation. we must trust the creative human spirit and resist the urge to defer to a machine.
